Alan Ross Consulting was established in January 2005 after Alan Ross had spent 20 years working in the consumer goods industry. As the trend towards offshore production continues so a need exists for flexible independent consultants able to service the need for technical knowledge of companies for whom it is no longer viable to maintain extensive in-house technical teams to advise on quality, safety and performance issues. Alan Ross provides a range of services designed to meet the varying needs of the customer in a timely and cost-effective manner.
in addition, Alan Ross Consulting provides a range of other services including bespoke training courses on consumer matters and health and safety issues as well as undertaking audits, inspections and expert witness services.
Most services are available not only in the UK but also on an international basis.

Alan Ross is the founder and a Director of GoalTesters
International Ltd which he set-up in 2007 to carry out independent testing of
goalposts for soccer, rugby, gaelic and hockey. GoalTesters International
currently operate in UK and Ireland.
About Alan Ross
Alan Ross is a Chartered Textile Technologist, Associate of the Textile Industry, Chartered Colourist, Associate of the Society of Dyers and Colourists, experienced and registered Expert Witness, and is qualified as a Lead Auditor for both quality management and social accountability systems.
Alan Ross is a graduate of the University of Bradford and has worked for the Ministry of Defence (Stores and Clothing Research & Development Establishment), AMTAC Laboratories Limited, City of Bradford Conditioning House, Drummond Group, and SGS United Kingdom Limited before setting up his own consultancy company in January 2005.
Alan has been a member of various British Standards institute technical committees (some for over 20 years) including those responsible for physical testing of textiles, flammability, apparel and care labelling and continues to be involved in the development of many different test methods and specifications.
Alan was vice-chairman of the Technical Committee of the Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry (ASBCI) until 2004 and remains an active member of the Association, having been involved in the updating of the Association's Code of Practice, and chairing the original committee responsible for the development of their technical bulletin 'Caring for your clothes'. in addition Alan has been a guest speaker at ASBCI Annual Conference and at their inaugural Student Conference.
Alan is currently the Honorary Secretary of the United Kingdom Textile Laboratory Form (UKTLF), a position he has held since the UKTLF was founded in 2001. In addition he undertakes the organisation and statistical analysis of UKTLFs inter-laboratory correlation exercises.
During 2004 Alan undertook tours of the Far East and India presenting seminars to the local textile industry about UK regulations concerning flammability of textile goods and also on the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Directive.
Throughout his career, Alan has been actively involved in dealing with clients on a one-to-one basis and has developed and delivered many different training courses to suit individual client's specific needs, from introducing textile testing for the beginner to courses on inspection and sampling, flammability and colour fastness. In addition Alan has vast experience of the integration of quality and safety processes into manufacturing industry.
During his time with SGS, Alan was responsible for the expansion of the softlines testing department in Bradford (including the incorporation of their former London testing operation into the Bradford site) and was responsible for their involvement in the Football Association's research into the safety of football goalposts.
Since 1998, Alan has been increasingly involved in consumer products other than textiles and in particular consumer items which have high risk such as candles and oil burners, safety matches and cigarette lighters, sports equipment (including football goalposts), and some juvenile articles including grobags/infant sleeping bags.
Throughout his career, Alan has undertaken litigation work on an ever increasing portfolio of products - from clothing and household textiles to dangerous cigarette lighters to collapsing football goalposts. Alan is registered and checked by Sweet and Maxwell and also by UK Register of Expert Witnesses, a process which is subject to the provision of references from lawyers who have used his expert services.
Since becoming an independent consultant, Alan has been heavily involved in several projects including the development of GoalTesters - a joint venture with Centre for Sports Technology to carry out field inspections on goalposts for their safety against the requirements British Standard BS8461; and developing audit systems for BSEN14065 Laundry processed textiles - biocontamination control system.
From mid-2005. Alan has been involved in the auditing of companies for compliance with the Ethical Trading Initiative's Base Code (on Employment) including compliance with UK and Irish health and safety legislation. Alan can offer training courses to raise awareness of ethical trading issues and/or health and safety legislation.
